I remember that night too, Danny Fisher!!
I remember the 1mc waking me up at 5:30 am with "plane in the water, plane in the water". I jumped up out of bed, then I heard "now set the walking blood bank for type(whatever) blood. I quickly dressed, and started running through the passageways to get to the mail handling room on the 03 level as I was a postal clerk. I heard a bunch of guys yelling "gang way, gang way"! I heard later from Tony Macomber a buddy of mine in VF51 that they were getting a cable to catch the damaged A7. I then passed a bunch of airman coming down from the flight deck. They looked pretty upset, and one of em' said, "stay off the flight deck, we got enough people up there". I remember the newspaper article, that I still have, said "planes collide, sailor dies". I never heard about those photos of the plane, I would have loved to have seen them. Yes, the guys name was Powers, I believe he had 18 years in the Navy when he was killed. He was impaled on a tiedown chain when the F14 exhaust blew him into it after being hit by the A7. How about the poor guy who's headset was connected to the F14. He heard "wave off" turned around and saw the A7 coming straight at him. He turned and dove into the catwalk. A few seconds later as he lay in the catwalk the F14 screamed right over his head and into the water. I used to remember, and, think about that night a lot, for many many years. I remember a lot of accidents that occured while I was onboard, like the A6 we lost off the coast off Iran, during the Iranian crisis. Lost 6 pilots, including the C.O. of VAQ135. They believe he forgot to plug in his G suit, and he blacked out while flying. I miss all of my Kitty Hawk shipmates. You are truly my blood brothers forever.....
